Don’t Let Insurers Undercut Your Family’s UIM Protection

Virginia’s new stacking law significantly increases the protection available to drivers and their families injured by poorly insured or uninsured drivers, especially when you or a family member suffers very serious injuries, such as at the hands of reckless or drunk drivers. As we've explained here and here, this law allows policyholders to “stack” policies for greater coverage, but only if they haven’t waived that right. That’s why it’s more important than ever to 1) increase your “underinsured motorist” limits: higher coverage means better protection for your family when you need it most; and 2) avoid car insurers’ attempts to get you to agree to reduce your UIM limits. Unfortunately, insurers are actively encouraging Virginians to cut their UIM limits, often without properly explaining the consequences. Don’t fall for it—talk to your lawyer before signing anything.
