New Report Reveals Missing 1-2 Hours of Sleep Doubles Crash Risk

everett-lr-0-2In an article published by AAA, it discussed a December 2016 report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s that found “that drivers missing 2-3 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period more than quadrupled their risk of a crash compared to drivers getting the recommended seven hours of sleep. This is the same crash risk the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration associates with driving over the legal limit for alcohol.”

According to Peter Everett, a trial lawyer with Blankingship & Keith who represents individuals who have suffered traumatic brain injuries resulting from tractor-trailer crashes and motor vehicle collisions, "Sleep deprivation is dangerous for any driver, as the study shows, but for truckers driving 50,000 pound tractor trailers, it can be deadly. Therefore, it’s critically important that trucking company safety directors establish programs, like sleep apnea screening, to keep exhausted truckers off the road."

The report is Acute Sleep Deprivation and Risk of Motor Vehicle Crash Involvement.
