Practice Areas: Civil Litigation, Eminent Domain & Condemnation

Paul Terpak enjoys an extremely diverse litigation practice in all courts in Northern Virginia.

Over the last 15 years, Paul has handled hundreds of condemnation cases with Hugo Blankingship, including dozens of trials before juries and commissioners in every jurisdiction in Northern Virginia. In 2005, they obtained the 5th largest jury verdict in Virginia in a condemnation case. In 2003, they obtained the 7th largest jury verdict in Virginia. Recently, the condemnation team successfully resolved a complex case involving the taking of a multi-national corporation's headquarters at Dulles Airport after challenging the constitutionality of the structure of the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority. Paul and Hugo handled the largest cases caused by the construction of the new Wilson Bridge (including the taking of a high-rise residential tower and damage to two remaining towers), and the "mixing bowl" project at the intersection of routes I-95 and I-495 in Springfield, Virginia (including hotels, retail, commercial and residential property.)

Paul has represented Inova Health Care Services (the largest private employer in Northern Virginia with 14,000 employees at five major hospitals) in litigation involving real estate, medical malpractice, business torts and other matters. He has represented a number of public bodies including Mount Vernon and Gunston Hall, and recently won an appeal to the Virginia Supreme Court for the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority in multi-million dollar litigation with Dominion Virginia Power over control of telecommunications rights on the W. & O. D. bike trail.

Paul also has represented a number of high-tech companies in employment matters, shareholder disputes and other contract matters. Recently, he successfully fended off an attempted takeover of a local exchange carrier after proving that the critical document was in fact a “cut and paste” forgery.

He has also handled a wide variety of commercial real estate litigation including specific performance claims, rescission suits, brokers’ commission claims, partition suits, breach of warranty claims and other matters. He recently represented a national publicly traded corporation in a highly contested real estate partnership dissolution suit involving claims of tortious interference by a major competitor.

Paul has spoken at numerous continuing legal education courses, and was selected by the Virginia State Bar Professionalism Committee to lecture its faculty on how to deliver effective speeches.
